Scripture: 1 John 5:1 (NLT)

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of GOD. And anyone who loves the Father loves his children too.”

  • “Christ” of course does not represent the surname of Jesus.
  • Christ means, “anointed One, Messiah, the Son of GOD.”
  • “Christ” is the Father’s anointed One who is the Messiah.
  • Jesus has been consecrated to the Messianic office.

So,  “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of GOD.”

John 1:11 & 12.

“He came unto his own and his own received him not. But, as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of GOD, even to them that believed on his name:”

  • Here is the connection between the gospel John 1 with the epistle of 1st John 5.
  • The epistle of John tells us that everyone who believes that Jesus is the Anointed One, the Messiah, has become a child of GOD.
  • And the gospel of John tells us that by believing on His name – this anointed of the Father – receives power to become sons of God.
  • How does this occur?
  • By believing in his name we then become “born again,” by the will of GOD.
  • We become new creations.

Listen to some other verses from John’s gospel.

  • Verse 14 – “and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us – the only begotten of the Father.”
  • This Word – another moniker for the 2nd member of the godhead was made flesh!
  • He is the only begotten of the Father.
  • He was not born of the Father – He was begotten of the Father – He came “out of” the Godhead in order to put on flesh.
  • And in coming ‘out of’ the Godhead, he robed Himself in flesh and became the Anointed One, the Messiah, The Christ.
  • In His flesh He became the Last Adam – our Kinsman Redeemer.
  • So, to believe on His name is to believe this – to believe that Jesus is the Christ, is to believe this.

This explains by Christian believers and Christian theology can boldly say, there is only one way to God.

There is only one true faith.

This may not be politically correct but it is nonetheless absolutely true.

Last day we talked about how we have lost our understanding of sin – lost our appreciation regarding sin’s utter horror.

Today, we are recounting who Jesus really is – the absolute uniqueness of His work of redemption. There is absolutely none like Him.

  • Through our faith and belief in His name we become sons of GOD.
  • “born, not of the flesh but by the will of the Father.”
  • It is a rebirth of our spiritual self by the action of the Holy Spirit and the finished work of the Word made flesh.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 says it this way:

“Therefore if anyone be ‘in Christ’ he is a new creature: old things pass away; behold all things become new.”

  • By believing “on Christ” we become “in Christ” and are therefore a new creature, a new creation – we have been born anew!
  • The word new here means “the act of founding, establishing something new, recent, fresh, unused and unworn.”
  • Behold, all things become new.
  • And as a result old things are now passed away.
  • What ‘old things?’
  • For one our old sin nature!
  • Our ‘old man’ as Paul would put it.

Ephesians 4:22:

“That you put off concerning the former conversations the old man, which is corrupt concerning deceitful lusts:”

  • This is the old man – the old sinful nature – that has now passed away.

And Colossians 3:8 & 9:

“But now you also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds;”

  • Here is a listing of some of the “old things” that have passed away.
  • We may still indulge in some of these behaviours, but the truth of the matter is that we ‘need not’ do these things, nor are we ‘compelled’ to act this way.
  • Our sin nature has been buried and therefore does not have further power over us.
  • Unless of course, we choose to dig him up again and act-our behaviours of the old man.
  • We are new creations – no longer ruled by, nor enslaved to, this old man, these old ways, this old nature!
  • This new creature or creation is the result of GOD’s establishing or founding something new, fresh, unused.
  • As He, in the beginning, established the heavens and the earth and founded them secure and unmoveable, so now He has done likewise for believers.
  • The same process of establishing a new creation, in us, as He did for the original creative work.
  • So, has He founded and established us as new creatures.
  • And not only new, but as members of His family – as sons of GOD.

Our introductory verse,

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of GOD. And anyone who loves the Father loves his children too.”

Tells us as well, that we are to love His other children.

  • This is the reason for Paul’s admonitions about how we are to act towards each other, without guile or malice et al.

The new birth and its proof.

1 John 5:10:

“He that believes on the Son of GOD has the witness in himself . . .”

  • We know that we are sons of GOD because of the witness of His Spirit with our spirit.
  • Here is a series of proofs that you indeed are a new creation – born-anew – and as such are sons of God and members of His family.

Hebrews 10:15 puts it this way:

“Whereof the Holy Spirit also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them, after those days, says the Lord; ‘I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.’”

  • A primary evidence that you are born-anew is that your possess the Spirit of GOD within yourselves and that this Spirit “converses” with you own spirit.
  • The indwelling Spirit of GOD is much more than mere conscience.
  • We have GOD’s laws “written” upon our hearts and minds.
  • We hear the conviction of the Holy Spirit when we are tempted to do wrong.
  • We identify His voice edifying us – directing us – instructing us into all truth.
  • We have all experienced moments when the Spirit enlightens a Scripture to us, and we are overwhelmed with awe and wonder.
  • We have all experienced the urging of the Holy Spirit to call someone – to pray for someone.
  • This is absolute proof that we are born-anew as new creations of GOD.
  • That we possess His Spirit as a down-payment for our future total redemption.
  • His Spirit is promised only to those who believe on His name and accept His Anointed One.
  • Therefore, since we possess His Spirit we KNOW we are saved.

We know we are sons of GOD because we have His word on it.

  • Upon the authority of God’s word we can be saved and KNOW

1 John 3:2:

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

  • We are now the sons of God because the Word of GOD says it is so.

2 Corinthians 5:21:

“For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

  • This act has resulted in the transference of natures. Jesus took on our sin nature and in exchange gave us the righteousness nature of Himself!
  • The old man is indeed dead, and we are now a new creation.
  • This proof that we are saved is again based upon the inerrant word of GOD.

Galatians 4:7:

“Wherefore you are no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

  • The word of God tells us that we are no longer servants, as we were under Satan, but sons, and heirs with Christ.
  • Jesus once said, “I no longer call you servants but friends.”
  • Sons of God – a position of authority – a position also as an heir.
  • We are saved, born-anew, and members of His royal household.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Matthew 24:35

  • The inerrant, infallible word of GOD tells us we are His sons, so it must be so!

We can know also that we are sons of God by the fact that He hears our prayer.

1 John 5:14 & 15:

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us: and if we KNOW that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we KNOW that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

  • There is a direct open-line between us and the Father.
  • That is never true with unbelievers and GOD.
  • The only prayer that GOD hears from an unbeliever is “GOD forgive me – GOD save me – GOD I’m sorry for my sin – Jesus save me.”
  • And the many, many times that we have seen our prayers answered is proof that we are His children.
  • And this is our confidence that we are saved.
  • If I ask my earthly mom and dad for something reasonable I will probably get it because I am a member of the family!
  • If I go down the street and ask a neighbour for the same thing, in all likelihood I won’t get it because I’m not of their family.
  • How many times have we been overwhelmed with the unusual, beautiful manner in which our loving Father answers us?
  • We are indeed sons of God.

And we KNOW, that we are sons of God because NOW we have the power to say no to sin. 1 John 5:18:

“We know that whosoever is born of God sins not; but he that is begotten of God keeps himself, and that wicked one does not touch him.”

  • This verse does not imply that believers never sin. What it does say is that habitual sin has been overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling the believer.
  • Scripture tells us that even if we do sin, as children of God, Jesus is our Advocate and is faithful to forgive us if and when we sin but then repent.
  • This involves daily house-cleaning, but we now possess the power to say no to sin.

We can know we are born again.

We can know that we are a new creation.

We can know that we are children of God, members of His family.

We can know that we are heirs in Christ Jesus.

Because His word says so.

Because the Holy Spirit has been given to us.

Because GOD hears us and answers our prayers.

Because we now have power over habitual sin.

In closing Acts4:12:

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among me, whereby we must be saved.”
