THE MANY “FACES” OF JESUS
In Scripture we have been introduced to Jesus in His many aspects.
What follows is a brief outline of six of these aspects of Jesus.
- Jesus offered as a Son
Isaiah 9:6 states:
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:”
- “a son is given.”
- This small section of Scripture gives us the first two aspects of Jesus.
- A child is born and a son is given.
- These are two distinct actions – they do not represent the same thing.
- We will discuss the child born in a moment but for now let us focus upon the “son that was given.”
Jesus offered (given) as a son.
From before the foundations of the earth it was determined that “The Word” – the Second Person of the godhead would be offered for the sins of mankind.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God, the same was in the beginning with God . . .”
- This Word is none other than the 2nd Person of the Godhead
- He was in the very beginning for He is God.
“That God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have [receive] everlasting life.”
- Here we have the Father giving His Son – Jesus offered as a Son.
1 Peter 1:20 Peter speaking of Jesus stated,
“Who was verily foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifested these last days to you . . .”
“Father, [the Son speaking with His Father] I will that they also, Whom Thou has given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory, which Thou has given me: for You loved me before the foundation of the world.”
Jesus – offered as a Son.
- Born as a baby
- From our Isaiah 9:6 verse quoted earlier – “A child is born.”
“Wherefore when He came into the world, He said, ‘Sacrifice and offering you would not, but a body have you prepared for me.”
- He is the last Adam
- The first Adam failed.
- Born unto Mary
- Jesus preached as a child.
“And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that hear him were astonished at his understanding and answers.”
- About my Father’s business?
Jesus given as a Son; born as a baby; preached as a child.
- Killed as a man.
“Crucify him, crucify him.”
“Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)
- He is called “the son of man.”
- He is our Kinsman Redeemer.
- Perfect Man to die in our place.
1 Corinthians 2:2,
“For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
Jesus, given as a Son, born as a baby, preached as a child, killed as a man.
- Arose as a Victor!
“Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”
“Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here; for He is risen.”
“The He said to Thomas, ‘Reach you finger here, and behold my hands; and reach you hand, and trust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.’ And Thomas answered and said unto him. ‘My Lord and my God.’”
Jesus given as a Son, born as a baby, preached as a child, killed as a man, arose as a Victor!
The Roman Road.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 5:6-10 select verses
“For when we were without strength in due time Christ died for the ungodly. But God commanded His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son . . . “
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
“But if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
- Jesus, coming back as a King.
“And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, ‘Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heave.’”
- This same Jesus.
- In like manner.
- Notice again, two witnesses!
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he does judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. . . And he had on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
(Stephen’s vision from Acts, 7:56.)
