Come to The Light, The Prince of Peace

As We Light The Candle of Peace

On The Second Advent

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given; and the

government shall be upon His shoulder.

And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father [of Eternity], Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 AMPC

I am doing something different today. The Lord has impressed this

idea upon me. For many days I have been doing a study of The Light

as presented throughout the Scriptures. As I have looked up and read

these many verses that I am sharing with you today, I pondered each

one and found great delight in discovering more about God’s plans,

His purposes and Who He is. And sometimes He has challenged me

to make changes in my life. I learned so much.

You may look at this list of Bible verses and initially feel that it is a

lot to take in. I agree. So I would ask you to read them all through

today, then throughout the week, read a few each day and take time to

seek the Lord as you ponder each verse. You may want to write down

any verse that has special meaning for you. I am trusting God to

reveal to you the meaning of each verse and how it may apply

personally to you, and I am trusting you to listen to the Lord and let

Him guide you and draw you and encourage you. You may be stirred

to praise God in some way. You may be stirred to make a decision to

change something in your life. It will be a very personal journey for

each one of you.

This Sunday is the Advent of Peace. These Scriptures have brought

me great Peace and I pray that they will do the same for you.

The Light of  the World

Jesus came.

He is The Word. He is The Life. He is The Light.

John 1:1-5,9,14   In the beginning [before all time] was The Word,

and The Word was with God, and The Word was God Himself.  He

was present originally with God. All things were made and came into

existence though Him; and without Him was not even one thing made

that has come into being.  In Him was Life, and The Life was The

Light of men.  And The Light shines on the darkness, for the darkness

has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it,

and is unreceptive to it].  There it was – The True Light [was then]

coming into the world [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] that

illumines every person. AMPC – Verse 14b: we beheld His glory, the

glory as of the only begotten of the father, full of grace and truth.

NKJV (in John’s vision, found in Revelation 19:13, 16, he sees Jesus

returning as Warrior-Messiah-King and “the title by which He is

called is The Word of God . . . King of kings and Lord of lords”

The Purpose of the Light

John 12: 44 – 46 Then Jesus cried out “when a man believes in Me, he does not believe in Me only, but in the One who sent Me. When he looks at Me he sees the One who sent Me. I have come into the world as a Light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness.”  NIV

1 Thessalonians 5:5-8 You are all sons of the Light and Sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober…. Putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet the Hope of Salvation. NKJV (sober means to be alert and self-controlled).

1 John 1: 5B, 7a God is Light and in Him is no darkness at all… Walk in the Light as He is in the Light.

2 Samuel 22:29 “for You are my lamp, oh Lord, You turn my darkness into Light.” NKJV

Psalm 4:6b Lord, lift up the Light of Your countenance upon us. NKJV

Psalm 19:8 The Commandment of the Lord is pure, giving Light to the eyes. NIV

At this point the Holy Spirit whispered into my heart, “we cannot see anything clearly or from the right perspective if we do not look at it from the Light of what God says in His Word.”

Hallelujah!

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? NKJV

Psalm 43:2-3  For You are the God of my strength [my Stronghold-in Whom I take refuge]; . . . O send out Your Light and Your Truth, let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling.

Psalm 56:12b,13  . . .O God, I will render praise to You, and give You thank offerings. For You have delivered my life from death, yes, and my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the Light of Life and of the living? AMPC

Psalm 97:11 Light is sown for the [uncompromisingly] righteous and strewn along their path way, and joy for the upright in heart [the irrepressible Joy which comes from consciousness of His Favour and Protection]. AMPC

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a Lamp to my feet and a Light to my path. NKJV

Psalm 119:130 The unfolding of Your words gives Light; it gives understanding to the simple. NIV (‘simple’ means lacking in knowledge.)

Isaiah 2:5 Come . . . Let us walk in the Light of the Lord. NIV

Isaiah 9:2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great Light. NKJV….  on those living in the land of darkness a Light has dawned. NIV

Matthew 4:16 The people who sat (dwelt enveloped) in darkness have seen a great Light, and for those who sat in the land and shadow of death, Light has dawned. AMPC

Matthew 5:16 Let your Light so shine before men, that they may see your praiseworthy, noble and good deeds and recognize and honour and praise and glorify your Father who is in heaven. AMPC

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil. NKJV(see Verse 18 for a fuller explanation.)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying.

“I am the Light of the world,

he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness,

but have the Light of Life.”

John 8:12 NKJV

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Luke 1:78-79 Because of and through the heart of tender mercy and loving-kindness of our God, a Light from on high will dawn upon us and visit [us] to shine upon and give Light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct and guide our feet in a straight line into the way of Peace. AMPC

Luke 2:28-32 [Simeon] took Him up in his arms and praised and thanked God and said, And now, Lord, You are releasing Your servant to depart (leave this world) in Peace, according to Your word. For with my [own] eyes I have seen Your Salvation, which You have ordained and prepared before (in the presence of) all peoples, a Light for revelation to the Gentiles [to disclose what was before unknown] and [to bring] praise and honor and glory to Your people Israel.

John 12:35-36a So Jesus said to them, You will have the Light only a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light [keep on living by it], so that darkness may not overtake and overcome you. He who walks about in the dark does not know where he goes [he is drifting]. While you have the Light, believe in the Light [have faith in it, hold to it, rely on it], that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light.

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God Who said, “Let Light shine out of darkness”, commanded the Light to shine out of darkness,  has shone in our hearts so as [to beam forth]  The Light for the illumination of the knowledge of  the majesty and the glory of God [as it is manifest in the Person and is revealed] in the face of Jesus Christ (the Messiah). AMPC (see especially verse 4 and rest of chapter for a greater understanding.)

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers [do not make mismatched alliances with them or come under a different yoke with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership have right living and right standing with God with iniquity and lawlessness? Or how can Light have fellowship with darkness? AMPC (also see verse 15 to 18 for context)

2 Corinthians 11:14 (- – – Paul is warning the people about false prophets, deceitful pretenders – – -) and it is no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of Light. AMPC (see verse 1 to 15 for context)

Prophecies about Jerusalem and God’s People

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, when [they compare their ineffectual fire to the Light of] the Lord of hosts, who will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before his Elders will show forth His Glory. AMPC

Isaiah 60:1 Arise [from the depression and prostration in which circumstances have kept you – rise to a new Life]! Shine (be radiant with the Glory of the Lord), for your Light has come, and the Glory of the Lord has risen upon you! AMPC

Zechariah 8:22-23 Yes, many people and strong nations shall come to Jerusalem to seek, inquire of and require [to fill their own urgent need] the Lord of hosts and to pray to the Lord for His Favour. Thus says the Lord of hosts: in those days 10 men out of all languages of the nations shall take hold of the robe of him who is a Jew, saying, let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you. AMPC

Isaiah 60:19 The sun shall no more be your Light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give Light to you, but the Lord shall be to you and everlasting Light, and your God your Glory and your Beauty. AMPC

The Expected Fulfillment

Revelation 21:23 And the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon to give Light to it, for the Splendor and Radiance (Glory) of God illuminate it and the Lamb is its Lamp. AMPC (See also verse 22 and verse 24 which says the nations shall walk by its Light.)

Praise for the Lord

Psalm 76:4 You are radiant with Light, more majestic than mountains rich with game. NIV . . .You are more glorious and excellent. . . KJV

Psalm 104:2 He wraps himself in Light, as with a garment.  NIV

Matthew 17:1-2 And six days after this, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And His appearance underwent a change in their presence; and His face shone clear and bright like the sun, and His clothing became as white as Light. AMPC

1 Timothy 6:15b,16  (God) Sovereign Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality [in the sense of exemption from every kind of death] and lives in unapproachable Light, whom no man has ever seen or can see… AMPC (recall Mount Sinai and the Ark of the Covenant. Exodus 33:20; 18 – 23 and John 1:17.  (God is a being whose quality our eyes are not made to see – of which our minds are not able to comprehend. He remains undisclosed, therefore we cannot see him directly. Through the work of our Lord Jesus and His shed blood we can approach God the Father, the veil is rent. Since the fall of Man, God was unapproachable.)

The Only Way

John 14:6  Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life;

no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me. AMPC

(It is clear to me as I have learned about Jesus from the Bible

that Light and Truth are synonymous. What do you think?)

Pastoral Prayer

Almighty God, You are the Lord of Creation, Designer and Maker of Heaven and Earth and all living creatures. We are so thankful that Jesus is our Prince of Peace. We are so thankful that Jesus is The Light, The Life, The Truth, The Word of God, and The Way. Help us to embrace all that this means to us not only for eternity but for the now, for our everyday lives. Jesus said that He came that we may have Abundant Life, we cannot help but think that by the ‘Abundant Life’ He was talking about Life that centres on Him as The Light, The Truth, The Life, The Way and The Word of God. Surely, oh Lord, if we focus on this fact and embrace it we will walk it out in our lives in the kind of abundance Jesus was talking about, which results in Peace. Hallelujah!

In today’s Bible verses we read about Simeon. Thank You Lord for his example: as He laid His eyes upon Jesus as an infant, he knew in his heart of hearts that his longing, his heart’s desire, to see the Messiah with his own eyes, had been fulfilled and Simeon was filled with great Peace. I also believe his joy was insurmountable. Thank You Lord that although we cannot see Jesus in the flesh right now, we can still ‘see’ Him with eyes of Faith and we can know the same Joy and Peace as Simeon as we place our Love upon You.

Thank You Father that we no longer need to fumble our way through life, or stumble around in the darkness of ignorance, because in Your Love and kindness for us You sent Your Son Jesus,  The Light from on high, to shine upon us and direct and guide our feet in a straight line into The Way of Peace. Lord, You are so loving and so amazing! Our hearts are filled with praise for You Lord. We magnify Your Name!

As we read and ponder these verses Lord, we see Jesus more clearly. We are thinking about how His face shone with white Light on the transfiguration mount and about how You are surrounded by Light so intense and bright that You are unapproachable. Thank You Father that the white robes of righteousness that Jesus wears are given to us as we repent and our sins are covered by His precious blood, making it possible for us to come near to You with love and even boldness. Wow!

We are appreciating in a greater way now the verse in Malachi 4:2 which says: But unto you who revere and worshipfully fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings and His beams, and you shall go forth and gambol like calves [released] from the stall and leap for joy. (AMPC) Thank You Lord, that Jesus is the Sun of Righteousness, and that every day, like the sun, He rises for us with healing in His wings. You, Lord, make us righteous every day. You, Lord Jesus,  are rising every day with healing in Your wings and beams. We receive that wonderful Truth right now Lord, with hearts full of Peace and expectation because we know that You are Faithful and Trustworthy, Your Word is tested and tried, and You always do what You say You will do. We receive Healing from the Sun of Righteousness, our Jesus, right now for _________________________.  (Fill in the blank with your personal need.) Hallelujah!

Father, there are many in our midst who are grieving, some very recently have suffered great loss. For others it may not be so fresh but at this time of year the pain is equally raw. I ask You Lord to meet each person who is grieving with Your Great Love and Comfort. May the Prince of Peace surround each one, holding them close, and bring comfort. Release Your angels Lord, to surround them with songs of Love and Joy and Peace whenever they begin to feel overwhelmed with sadness,  whether it be during the day or in the long, lonely night hours.

And Father, we commit to You our members, friends and loved ones who are suffering daily from the isolation that has been created by the COVID-19 crisis. Stir up our hearts every day to consider who we can call or get in touch with to help alleviate the loneliness and feelings of isolation. It’s affected all of us, whether we are willing to admit or not. Please help us. And thank You Lord, that You are Faithful and always available. Help us to remember that we can talk to You in the same way that we talk to family or friends. We don’t need elaborate form or special words. You are always so happy to hear from us. When we draw near to You, You always draw near to us. There is no one like You, Lord. Hallelujah!

Thank You Lord for the promises of Psalm 91, that You will protect us from every form of plague and pestilence as we put our trust in You and make You our refuge and set our love upon You. Thank You that You give Your angels charge over us. Thank You for hearing us and promising to answer and deliver us. Thank You that You will satisfy us with long life and show us Your Salvation in every situation. Glory to God! In Jesus’ wonderful name we pray. Amen

An Advent Prayer for Peace

Lord, in a season when every heart should be happy and light, many of us are struggling with the heaviness of life-burdens that steal the joy right out of our stockings. Tragedy arrives as innocent victims suffer, and an inner voice whispers, “Be afraid!” We need your Peace, Jesus. We confess that our hearts are too often filled with wonder of a different kind: wondering when the bills will be paid, when the terror will stop, when rest will come. Will it ever? Is the message still true? In a world where worry, not Peace, prevails, stir up that good news again.

This Advent, make it real in our hearts. Never have we needed Your Joy and Peace more than now. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, our Immanuel, the Word made flesh. We not only need Your Peace and Joy; Lord, we crave it. You’ve promised rest for the weary, victory for the battle-scarred, Peace for the anxious, and acceptance for the broken hearted-not just at Advent, but every day of every year. Your name is still called “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “The Mighty God,” “The Everlasting Father,” and “The Prince of Peace.” We know that Peace on earth can only come when hearts find Peace with You. You are still our Joy. You are still our Peace. You are no longer a babe in the manger. You are Lord of lords and King of kings. And we still celebrate You as Lord-this Christmas and always.

A One-Word Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

This is my one word prayer: PEACE.

I can’t see ahead. I don’t know what to do.

Here are all my fears and my questions… [share yours]

I want to experience Your perfect Peace.

Let it be with me. Just as You say.

Hold me, God, so I can hear You whisper to me, “You don’t have to know the way. I do.”

In Jesus’ name, Amen
